Raikkonen does 100 virtual starts on Ferrari simulator
Kimi Raikkonen is confident he will not be victim of another disastrous start at this weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix.
After qualifying on the front row at Monza, the Finn dropped to last before the first corner after his Ferrari went into ‘anti-stall’ as he dropped the clutch.
Initially, the Finn and the Maranello team disagreed about who was to blame. According to Turun Sanomat newspaper, Raikkonen retired to the sophisticated driver simulator at Maranello, where he practiced the race start procedure 100 times.
Raikkonen said in Singapore that he now suspects he flicked a lever the wrong way at the Monza start, “We know roughly what the reason was.”
“If it was my own fault, fine, but I did pretty much everything as I should have. You just have to learn from it and hopefully it will not happen again,” Raikkonen added.
He denied that the new start procedure, where the drivers are no longer given complex instructions from engineers on the formation lap, was the reason for the Monza glitch.
“No,” said Raikkonen. “The same thing could have happened earlier this year or even last year.”

Mercedes’ team principal Toto Wolff said he is concerned about the pace of rivals Red Bull in Singapore.
Both Red Bulls finished the second practice session ahead of the two Mercedes drivers.
“We are not happy with the performance today,” said Wolff during today’s FIA press conference. “We haven’t really made the tyre work in a way we should on the one-lap performance, and on the long runs either.” “We’ve seen some spectacular laps from the Red Bulls. Just need to get our heads together and assess what’s happening.”

What’s going on behind the scenes in F1 with Red Bull, Renault and VW/Audi?
The F1 driver market may have lost its sting this year, but the engine market is buzzing as F1 teams continue to struggle to make sense of the hybrid turbo engines and Red Bull finds itself in a difficult position with no supplier for next season.
Into this maelstrom have come bulletins this weekend from various quarters; Eddie Jordan has stated that VW is set to do a deal with Red Bull from 2018 onwards, possibly with its Audi brand, while the word in the Singapore paddock is now that the deadlock between F1 commercial chiefs at FOM/CVC and Renault has been eased and the French manufacturer is now looking more likely to stay in the sport, taking over the reins at Lotus.
So what is going on?
First VW/Audi. Red Bull has had a long relationship with the brand and prior to the Infiniti sponsorship its team members drove Audis as their main transport at the races.
However, despite intense pressure for years both from Red Bull and Bernie Ecclestone, there has been little enthusiasm for VW/Audi to enter Formula 1. Jordan says that has changed and the giant is poised to commit. This is certainly what Red Bull and Ecclestone want to happen, but there are logistical challenges, even if the board can be persuaded to commit.
Martin Winterkorn, the new VW boss, is no great fan of F1; he prefers Bundesliga football, but it appears that Red Bull boss Dietrich Mateschitz has presented some attractive options to Audi for a package whereby they derive benefit from an F1 involvement, with Red Bull taking some of the financial risk and funding infrastructure.
One problem is that Audi’s WEC engine facility is not suitable for F1, so one option being considered is the acquisition of Cosworth in Northampton, UK. This would present an interesting challenge to Mercedes High Performance Powertrains, which is based only a few miles away; many of the current Mercedes engine builders came from Cosworth, including the boss Andy Cowell. They would fear losing key staff to the new outfit.
Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff met recently with Winterkorn, perhaps that was one of the topics of discussion.
More pressing for VW is that they are having to recall almost 500,000 diesel cars in the USA over emissions irregularities, with software allegedly designed to get around emissions tests. According to the Financial Times, the US Environmental Protection Authority could theoretically make VW pay “fines per vehicle of up to $37,500 — a total of more than $18bn.”
Next Renault. After the Italian Grand Prix we reported that talks between Renault and Ecclestone/CVC had broken down as F1’s commercial chiefs were not willing to pay Renault the annual prize money bonus it felt it deserved. Renault would not commit to buying the Lotus team until it had those financial guarantees, hence the delays and the ongoing problems for Lotus. The team was in court in London on Friday with the UK tax authorities pursuing them, however the case was adjourned, clearly to give them more time to close out this deal with Renault.
There seems to have been movement at a high level this weekend on the matter and there seems to be less pessimism around the takeover than last week, or more optimism is another way of looking at it. Some sticking points remain on the amount of up-front money, however.
There appears to have been a realisation that F1 cannot afford to lose another team and especially cannot afford to lose Renault, one of the pioneers of the hybrid turbo technology. They pushed hardest for it to be introduced and what kind of story would it tell about the sport if they left with their tail between their legs, while another automotive giant Honda, is also having its reputation for innovation and efficiency massacred by a woeful F1 engine?
Daimler boss Dieter Zetsche, who was very high profile at Monza, has an automotive collaboration with Renault and hinted last week that Mercedes may be prepared to help Renault in F1; sources suggest that this meant assistance with getting up to speed on some key areas of the F1 hybrids.
Time will tell. Sources here in Singapore insist that Romain Grosjean, who said he has decided where he will drive next season, has taken himself out of the equation by signing for Haas F1 for next year. If this is the case then Jean Eric Vergne’s luck could be in. The second most experienced French F1 driver is in a reserve driver role at Ferrari but is ready to go and is strongly supported by Alain Prost, who would become a shareholder and key figure in a new Renault F1 presence.
So who will use what engines next season? If the Renault deal takes place then Toro Rosso will use Ferrari engines – Ferrari is very keen to get a chance to study Carlos Sainz and Max Verstappen for the future and what better way than by working with them? Manor may use Mercedes engines, as Mercedes is keen to place Pascal Wehrlein in an F1 team.
And Red Bull? Mateschitz said yesterday that two years with Ferrari engines would be ideal, but Ferrari is asking itself the same questions as Mercedes did before ruling out a partnership with the Austrian drinks giant. If they have full engine parity, then there is a risk of being beaten by an Adrian Newey chassis. And if Red Bull can’t match Ferrari then Red Bull’s track record suggests that they would criticise the engine. Mercedes concluded that this would be a lose-lose and declined the business.
Ferrari, as the last one on the dance-floor, may have little choice but to accept Red Bull’s offer to dance ‘for the good of the sport’ – otherwise Red Bull would have no engine with the inevitable damaging consequences for F1.
