    Hybrid option with 3.7L V6 (180 kW/245 HP) plus two electric motors (30 kW/41 PS and 25 kW/34 PS)

V8 Diesel Hybrid for the US (same as in the GST)

no new V8s so far. From 2006/07 on new V8s with direct injection and more cubic.

V12 biturbo still with 612 HP. Maybach will also come with 612 HP. No higher output possible due to gear box.

Pre-Safe II, no more SBC. All SBC functions are now also possible with conventional brakes.

Exterior: Back will look similiar to the Maybach because customers asked for more representativeness

Interior: Classic round instruments again. Command-System loses some superfluous functions, easier menu navigation including an "Escape" button. Plus, there will be a touch pad on the center console.

New Mercedes s-class: small May brook
With the successor of the s-class, which optically particularly at the tail style elements of the May brook flagship carries, Mercedes wants again all registers of Swabian engineer technology to draw and particularly on the areas security and environment form itself. Premiere: to the IAA in the autumn 2005.
Therefore - not from the outset, but at least in the course of the seven-year-olds construction period - also hybrid drive in the new s-class introduction is to hold. A concept of the technology was to be already seen on the last IAA in form of a 3,7-Liter-V6-Benzin-Hybriden with 180 KW (245 HP) plus two electrical motors with 30 KW (41 HP) and 25 KW (34 HP), connected by clutches.

Particularly with view of possible new exhaust laws in the USA Mercedes works on the series employment of this low-pollution technology and reproaches also still another V8-Diesel with hybrid drive, which was introduced in the luxury Offroader GST and into the new s-class would if necessary likewise fit.
New eight cylinder engines with four-valve technology
Conservative s-class-drivers, who trust only combustion engines, will come naturally further at their expense: With the SLK 350 and the filter course mechanism Mercedes presented a straight engine/gear combination, which will act in the future with the s-class at the basis - from the sales start at the end of on of 2005.

Eight-cylinder customers must take for the time being with the well-known engines before dear, because the Vierventil-V8-Generation comes only 2006/2007, then however with gasoline direct injection and larger capacity.

Performance-related is everything in it with Mercedes? if the problem with the transmission were not there. The V12-Biturbo could put far more than 612 HP to the day, but the associated torque increase would require an expensive and complex transmission adaptation, which might hardly have to be justified for the small numbers of items.

Thus it will remain probably provisional with 612 HP, a value, which fits starting from 2005 by the way also finally for the May brook, which is to be had so far only in the 550 HP version.
Pre pre-Safe of the second generation
With the new s-class-generation Mercedes starts a large safety campaign and fulfills naturally also the then valid European-wide guidelines to the pedestrian protection: In the case of a collision the hood within the rear range sets up itself suddenly around approximately eight centimeters.

Pre Safe phase two covers a refinement of the well-known system (with danger of accident automatic closing of the sun roof, list of the backrests, rationalisation of the belt), in addition a much more thought out Distronic function (Abstandsregeltempomat) with higher delay values comes.

The electrohydraulical brake SBC from e-class and SL is not used in the s-class. A resolution, which was already seized before long time, because the system is too expensive and too susceptible. All its functions can be realized meanwhile also with conventional brake.

Stilistisch reminds the new s-class particularly within the tail range a little of the May brook? Mercedes considers thereby after more Repraesentativitaet to the demand for customer. The body dimensions change however only slightly. Further it will give the s-class also as long version. All-wheel drive will be from the outset available this time.

In the interior in the future again classical round instruments dominate. The value seeming is to be increased clearly. The Comand system is cleared out by redundant functions and the menu guidance is simplified. Among other things there is to be a escape-Taste. The operation is to be facilitated also by a Touch PAD in such a way specified in the center console.

The W221-Series is to make its official debut next year; with a longer wheelbase and wider doors, it will be roomier and easier to access than the already comfortable current-generation model. Cabin quality and refinement will be enhanced to widen the gap between this car and the excellent E-Class, and ever-more sophisticated gadgets, telecommunications systems and driver aids will feature. These will include a sophisticated crash avoidance system incorporating the cruise control, sensors all round the car and the existing Pre-Safe set-up, which puts airbags on standby and activates the seatbelt pre-tensioners, up to sixteen airbags and even, insiders suggest, a pedestrian-protecting airbag which deploys from behind the front grille. All these items will be supported by a new 42-volt electrical architecture.

Externally, the S-Class will change little, with just minor tweaks to the headlights and door mirrors; options will include a full-length electro-chromatic sunroof and, inside, the massaging dynamic multi-contour seats. Engines will include V6 and V8 petrol units, an AMG-prepared 6.3-litre V8 giving an estimated 600bhp and the Maybach's 6.5 bi-turbo V12 (500bhp), plus 3.0 V6 and 4.0 V8 diesels. Although initially some of the non-AMG models will be supercharged, and badged Kompressor, ultimately supercharging will be replaced by turbocharging in engines across the range.

Caught testing nearly undisguised is the redesigned 2006 Mercedes-Benz S-class. Expected to debut at the 2005 Frankfurt show, the new big-body Benz is longer and wider than the current model. From the spy shots it is clear that the rear-end styling has a Maybach influence, and the greenhouse and the roofline borrow heavily from the upcoming CLS.

Inside, Mercedes has wrought a cabin that seems clearly influenced by BMW's controversial 7-series. The dashboard design plainly imitates the big BMW with a center display to handle infotainment and COMAND system duties. A close look at the center armrest reveals an iDrive-like control knob. Furthermore, a reduction in dashboard buttons suggests that most controls will be operated by this knob. Hopefully, Mercedes will make the system more intuitive than BMW's infamously obtuse iDrive.

In cars bound for the U.S., power will come from revamped gasoline V-8 engines. The previous-generation three-valve heads are out, replaced by four-valve heads that, along with direct injection, should increase horsepower. Keeping fuel consumption in check will be a cylinder deactivation system that will shut down cylinders at cruising speeds. Current-generation naturally aspirated V-12 S-classes used cylinder deactivation before the engines were turbocharged in 2003. Not too long after the standard models are launched, expect a more powerful, naturally aspirated, 6.3-liter V-8 AMG version with at least 500 horsepower, as well as a 6.0-liter twin-turbo V-12 with over 600 horsepower. New diesels are reportedly in the cards for European customers, but it seems unlikely that we'll see these engines in this country. All engines will be mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission.

Several new safety systems will grace the S-class. To achieve compliance with the 2006 European crash regulations, the car will sport external airbags that allow it to keep a low hoodline while protecting pedestrians. The airbags inflate out of the grille and cover the front of the car to cushion anyone unfortunate enough to step out in front of the new S-class. A crash-avoidance system makes use of the automatic cruise-control sensors. If a terminal closure rate is sensed, the system will automatically apply the brakes. The system also will have a lane-departure warning function that will alert the wandering driver to an inadvertent lane change.
