Montenegrin Prime Minister Djukanovic Announces Retirement: Citizens Got Tired of Me

    Dejan Milovac
    20 July 2004

In an interview he gave for Belgrade PINK TV, Montenegrin Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic announced his retirement from politics after the independence referendum is held.

    Milo Djukanovic
Djukanovic said that he got tired with politics, but that he couldn’t see his future outside Montenegro. "I hope that in the future I will have more opportunities to work that I find a personal challenge,” said the Prime Minister. He believes that the citizens got tired of certain people in Montenegrin politics, but he added that he considered leaving politics at the time when Montenegro fought the Milosevic regime immoral, and that he had to take on the task of implementation of reforms.

"I do support the principle of frequent changes in politics, but they will follow once we have our security and political stability secured,” estimates Djukanovic. He said that the dropping ratings and popularity were quite expected, having in mind that he implements rather unpopular reforms.

He announced in his interview for PINK TV that the planned discussions with Serbian leadership about the postponement of the Parliamentary Elections for the SCG Parliament, which he foresees held February 2005 at the latest. According to Djukanovic, those elections would be mere waste of time and funds. In his opinion, first there should be a referendum on independence held in Montenegro and that the elections should follow only if the referendum fails.

Djukanovic said that, were he in the shoes of Serbian leadership, he would take the similar position towards Montenegro. Serbia, which is 17 time bigger than Montenegro, he said, has the natural tendency to dominate the relationship, while Montenegro has to defend its own interests.

The Prime Minister said that his political career is closely tied to the project of independence, and reiterated that it is the sole condition for the survival of Montenegro and its identity.

"I am fully dedicated to that goal, whether it is reached through mutual agreement with Serbia or by a referendum,” he said. He added that, should the referendum fail, other people would be more competent to lead Montenegro in what should be a completely different type of union between the two states.

Sporno je "ide covjek iz politike". Prvo, nije covjek nego Njegovo Visocanstvo Premijer.

I tako ti on planira vec poduze. E je mudra to glava, ne cini taj nista sto nece dobro isplanirat'. Tako je dobro isplanirao pa je Crnoj Gori najljepse u njenoj istoriji. A i sire.

Tako ti je sporno kad ce se zavrsit to planiranje. E se bez plana ne moze.

    A ka' ce, ne znamo.
